The family trip and beyond

Dear Hashers,

At yesterday's circle we had decided to hold the family trip on the third weekend of November. Majority wanted a 3- days, 2 nights getaway. It is your trip and we will try our best to tailor the trip to your demands so that we get maximum participation.

GH5 is certainly a family to many of us, especially guys like Ben, Hi-lo, Piss-stop and Goldfinger whose  commitment no one will question.  But what does GH5 really means to you? Sure it's about running, the beers and the fellowship. It may be also the incremental increase in fitness we see in ourselves each week or just something to do since our kids have grown up and you need a new challenge. Surely you have your reasons for being with us in GH5.

I believe that our interactions over the years has given valuable insights about each other, about our own human weaknesses, hopes and desires. Hash brings about a connection or bond that is not possible in other settings like our work place where we hide behind our masked veils. There is too much to lose in our work place. Hash has also brought some of us our best and lifetime friends. Yes, there are misunderstandings among our group but the reality is that there is so much good in the worst of us and so much bad in the best of us, that it ill behoves any of us to criticize the rest of us. Not a single one of us is perfect but by God's grace we are still together and stronger than ever. So guys let's forget any transgressions among ourselves. GH5 is truly family where love, forgiveness and concern abounds which I hope the family trip will add to.

Bengkok's death during one of our runs reminded us of our mortality. There was a kaleidoscope of emotions, some with a sense of insecurity, while some panicked. Likewise, for me, it was also a time to see how I was to react to all this. I had only done CPR on mannequins and without notice I had to do it on a real person for the very first time. I too had to dig deep in for strength and courage.

With the multifaceted chaos in the world (economic, geological and political), some are still wanting, while some like V power have gone beyond the “I” to bring back joy and sense of self-worth to others like the orphans and underprivileged. Yet some content to remain addicted to compensating for their own insecurities, whilst others have gained a measure of consciousness by challenging status quo, searching for a connection between the soul and need for security, and the courage to seek a deeper meaning in their lives. Maybe that is why you are hashing, be it the fellowship, the sense of belonging or whatever. We humans are made void on the inside, and are always searching for something to fill it be it hash, God, Rotary club or doing charity for charity sake. I pray that you will discover within yourself what truly fills the void within you.

Each day presents enough problems. Hash may be a day whereby for a few hours we lay down the burdens momentarily to savor what in life is truly precious to us- be it our  health, sanity, friends or family?. There seem to be a great yearning in us all, for hope, healing and balance in our lives. Yes, hope not just growth, healing not just dealing (some members are always on the phone doing deals even during a run), to be balanced and not be burned out. In reality how much longer can we keep doing “more of the same” without a different perspective to things. I believe hashing and our interactions gives us this different perspective despite the demands placed on our lives. Hashing reveals the humanity in all of us, and to all of us. This is nothing to be ashamed of as we are a family.

As we move on in what remains of this year, we need to reconnect our soul with our needs, of hope, healing and balance, there is a realization that a new wave of faith and courage are required. I am sure you all have it within you.

Lastly I trust that you will come to the family trip and see it beyond as just another outing.

Best regards,
Incredible Hulk
