Gooday, viewers, friends and GH5 members. On behalf of the committee I would like to wish you all a Gong Xi Fa Cai. May God's grace abound on your life, in your homes and those of your loved ones.
The year of the dragon is over and we are ushering on the year of the snake. I believe it is a year we will consolidate on the good we have done, and a year to build GH5 from strength to strength.
Today, the entire Chinese diaspora celebrates Chinese New year.
Dad got a call from the Jiaoling county government office wishing him Gong Xi Fa Cai. It is good to know that the Chinese government has increasingly come to value the Chinese overseas communities and sought to establish closer cultural and economic links with them. As president of the Kayin association, KL/Selangor he and his colleagues has been to China several times on the invitation of the Meizhou prefecture government in Guangdong.
The Chinese diaspora is long established in many countries, sometimes dating back to the 19th century, or much earlier in south-east Asia. It is estimated that there are now at least half a million Chinese living in Africa, most of whom have arrived very recently. Even Microsoft, the American software powerhouse dare not go it alone in Africa and have teamed up with China's Huawei to penetrate into the African smartphone maket. There are more than 7 million Chinese in each of Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, more than 1 million each in Burma and Russia, 1.3 million in Peru, 3.3 million in the US, 700,000 in Australia and 400,000 in the UK - about 40 million in all, which is almost certainly a considerable underestimate.
The Chinese diaspora enjoy an extremely strong sense of shared identity as well as a powerful attachment to China, feelings that tend to override regional and political differences. This affinity finds expression in many ways. The overseas Chinese have played a crucial role in China's economic growth, providing the lion's share of inward investment since the late 1970s. When Deng Xiaoping made a comeback in the 70s, and announced China's reform and needed most help from overseas Chinese entrepreneurs; Malaysia's richest man Robert Kuok was first to take action to help Deng. Among the other entrepreneurs of Chinese economic miracle are Henry Fok and Li Ka-shing Hong Kong.
During my grandfather's and dad's generation, China was synonymous with poverty and isolation, but now we are proud of its rise in the global arena. Many of us are now signing up to learn Chinese and are sending our kids to Chinese vernacular schools. Some of us have even started businesses in China.
The Chinese diaspora, however, has three characteristics that together mark it out as distinct. First, it is numerically large and spread all around the globe, from Africa to Europe, east Asia to the Americas. Second, for historical and cultural reasons, it enjoys an unusually strong identification with the Middle Kingdom. Third, China is already a global power and destined to become perhaps the most powerful country in the world. And as its rise continues, as Chinese worldwide interests grow exponentially, the Chinese diaspora is likely to expand greatly; become increasingly prosperous, buoyed by China's own economic success; enjoy growing prestige as a result of China's rising status; and feel an even closer affinity with China.
