The Best Practice

GH5 is a family and that is what makes us strong. But if we pretend and deny there is no room for improvement we are not only lying to ourselves, but will surely permit our own demise. As a family we go through everything together - the highs and the lows.

When things go wrong as they sometimes do, we have to face it and call a 'spade' a 'spade'. If something went wrong we have to recognize it, accept it, and ask ourselves how to prevent a recurrence. When something has already happened, there are 2 options; (1) pretend it didn't happen; (2) put in best practices to ensure others don't make the mistakes you made. That is how best practices evolve. If we sweep it under the carpet, how do we improve as an organization?

Yes the pen can be mightier than the sword, but I just happen to be the elected scribe by virtue of being the elected On Sec, but as a member of GH5 I also have a right to voice my opinion. Furthermore, what I wrote echoed the sentiments of the committee on the matter as we had a meeting the day after the incident. There were no finger pointing but all matters were discussed on principles in general and had the overall wellbeing of the club in mind.

To ensure the safety of the runners is entirely different from guaranteeing. Guaranteeing is like signing on a piece of paper to underwrite that 100% it will happen. No one can guarantee all will come out of each run safely. "Ensuring" is about making sure we had adhered to the best practice to minimize any mishap.

The best organizations have the best practices. The best companies have the best Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which are continually improved upon. Factories have SOP to ensure and minimize the risk that workers don't lose their fingers while operating machines. In a pharmaceutical factory there are SOP to make sure the high blood pill is to the exact specification and not something toxic. The best organizations have the best industry standards and best practices. The best are committed to best practice. I am not saying we are, or ain't the best hash club there is, but at least we have to adhere to what had been agreed as "best practice" which incidentally had been circulated by our previous GM. If for any moment, any run or any event we can't adhere to the 'best practice' then we just don't do it. Just say you don't have the time. Then the hare just have to find someone else to do it properly and according to the best practice. If you didn't follow the best practice in setting the run, everyone has a right to point out or criticize, except the "hare". Think about it!

No one is indispensable in GH5 including Piss Stop, V Power or Hong Kee. We are an organization that has appointed a committee to take care of its affairs. Even as a member I have a right to point out where things can be better, let alone being the On Sec (since I have accepted the On Sec job, for the 12 months tenure I will perform "professionally" and do my best that I can for the club, and not according to the whimps and fancies of any individual including Baby Monkey. I will live longer and enjoy hash more just being an ordinary member). Likewise, as an organization we have to adhere to rules and regulations of the Societies Act 1966. As a public organization we are also subject to the Financial Pcocedure Act 1957 in handling public monies.

If any organization is entirely dependent on any particular individual for any specific function, then the organization is weak and deserves to be vanquished anytime. Our club is not and will not be at the mercy of the whims and fancies of any individual. If it is, then it deserves to be f#€ked. Think about it! If GH5 is entirely dependent on any individual for any function, then it deserves to to be out of business. If we were entirely dependent on Kangaroo to lead us all the time we would have been long gone. If we were entirely dependent on Goldfinger to set runs till now, none of us would have learnt how to set a run. If we had been dependent on Donald to be the eternal scribe there will be no more postings from the day he stopped to be On Sec. We need to hold on together, improve where we need to (but we have to be honest with ourselves) and develop new talents in the club. If we don't we will die a natural death. But guys, GH5 will outlive all of us, unless we all don't want it to, but who is saying the club is dependent on any individual to perpetuate. As the saying goes, the king is dead, but long live the king.

No one asked us to be perfect, but in whatever we do, if we had adhered to the best practice we are "blameless". We by nature are not perfect and no one is asking us to be perfect, but we can be blameless. Being perfect and being blameless are entirely two different matters. Let's all do what is needed for the betterment of the club.
