Glucosamine Sulphate
FACTS
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease whereby there is loss of cartilage in the joints resulting in pain, stiffness and decreased joint mobility. Swelling and inflammation of the joints may also be present.
Glucosamine sulfate is a naturally occurring amino acid sugar synthesized in the body from L-glutamine and glucose. It is a building block for proteoglycans, large molecules in cartilage that give it viscoelastic (buffering) properties. As a supplement, glucosamine is derived from shellfish. When taken orally it can be traced to cartilage as soon as four hours after consumption.
Studies have shown moderate benefit when used for osteoarthritis of the knee or hip to treat pain, but the one study for the spine is inconclusive.
Glucosamine sulfate is available in capsule form and sold without prescription. Please consult your pharmacist about a reliable brand.
