Beyond Gispert

The problem with hashing today is its projection. Hash clubs undoubtedly is a form of entertainment. However, it can be beyond just a form of entertainment, a circle for telling jokes and speaking vulgarity while having a few beers. It is only those with limited minds that confine hash to what they see hash to be, when fresh minds envisage great possibilities. Society itself has gone beyond Gipsert's days in 1938.

Hash can be more than that just entertainment. More than fitness, more than the beers.

It can be a place of development for kids and the youth. Hashing at times evokes our survival and navigational skills that we never knew we had. Hashing makes us care about preservation and the environment which in the past we were ignorant of.  Its about embracing the forest in all its serenity and tranquility. Hashing is a place for us to learn leadership skills. Just because you are born into a rich family business does not mean you are a natural leader. If you can develop leadership skills in hashing, your business may improve. It is also a place to learn organizational skills. Be thrown into the deep end of things, and you will realize there is much attention needed to even small details when the club organizes an event like a family trip or annual dinner. Hashing is a place to learn and share and go beyond the "I" and "me" and be a giver rather than a recipient. Isn't it more blessed to give than to receive?

It is a place to learn social skills and meet people from different walks of life and different classes of society. If you are a big boss in your company, no one will dare be your critic, but in hash you will have to learn to take feedback, constructive criticism and humble yourself. And all of it is good for character building. It is not just about Me, Myself and I but everyone else and the interest of the club. It is a place where you can motivate and encourage people who need a little borrowed light from us, or be encouraged ourselves. Hash can be a place where people and characters are built.

For some it can be a platform for improving your English. You may never reach the level of Shakespearean artistry, but at least you dare to stand on the box and muster a few sentences in English.  Hash is also a place for relieving our stress. To some, it is your weekly visit to the pub with the cheapest beers.

If I were a documentary producer, I would and could do at least 10 episodes on the many aspects of hashing. There are many stations and media dying for a good story but we are....
