We have come to end of another year. What has it all meant to us as a group and what has it meant to us on an individual basis?
GH5 in the year 2012 has seen some members leave - Phang Joe, Pussy cat & co, Taugeh, Sekali Pusing, Faker and Sir Pository.
Some of them may have felt that their creaky joints are unable to withstand the rigors from the constant pounding on the terrains; while some have left for other priorities. Yet some diehards remain like Popeye, Olive, Stumpy, Piss Stop and Mad Dog even though they are past their prime and usually do not complete the runs, as hashing is already a way of life and GH5 to them is family.
At the same time we welcome the return of two GH5 stalwarts – Shitface and King Trucker – as well as a host of new members in the likes of Touch & Gold, EmasTag, Tambah Nilai, Kio, Ma Pong Mei, Kenny and 7tan.
Special mention must be given to those that keep GH5 ticking week in-week out.
Ben – being on top of the hare queue/ run master
Bijis - maintaining the blog wrt run site
Fish Shit, MK and wife – always available to help set runs
Piss stop – keeping tabs of the beer man
Silent/Push Up – making sure the funds are collected and accounts are positive
These people contribute week in, week out. Without them, our club simply can’t operate. Yes, surely those who conduct the circle are important elements too, but some chapters like Sunday Hash don’t even have a weekly circle and still enjoy themselves. The On Blog isn’t essential as most chapters do not even have a website and if they do it has not been updated for 5 years.
As for 2012, GH5 had a successful charity dinner event.
The CNY run was held in Ara Damansara while AK47 held the Merdeka run at Bukit Subang.
At the Merdeka run I finally got my first pair of socks that are different colored. I had always wanted a pair of different colored hash socks as I think they are real cool.
The Family Day was initially to be held at Bukit Gambang but due to poor response it was changed to Pulau Ketam. Of note, we had a joint run with Cheras Hash (CH4).

We are only as good as the people and the leaders we have in the chapter. We have many talents in the club. It is a matter of putting them into positions so that they can contribute, people like Sonny, EmasTag, Shitface and King Trucker. Remaining status quo is as good as being mediocre. New blood should and will bring new life, energy, ideas, new events and vibrancy to the chapter. And no individual can do it alone, as success requires a team effort. We need leadership with initiative. Yes it is all voluntary but the run-of-the –mill mode won’t bring any excitement to the chapter.
What has it meant to you as an individual in 2012?
I see new members like Touch & Gold and EmasTag improve their stamina and speed drastically over the past year. While a few like myself have regressed, while some have resigned to short cutting each week as the runs are increasingly longer and tougher.
New friendships, social groups and even new romances have formed within GH5. Yes hashing is very much a part of most members and certainly a great portion of my life now. Most of my social events are now hash related. For some life evolves around the church, while the older generation like my dad spends all his time and social life around clan associations. We humans need to belong to something and be part of a social network. It is in our genetic make-up. GH5 certainly has provided that for me. It is not just the run and the beers but to genuinely have a friendship base to chill out with when life gets a little weary, during festivities and even to roam the streets with at Bersih 2.0.
I will not last forever at GH5. The constant pounding with my 93kg weight on my right knee is taking its toll. I can’t even completely bend that knee anymore. GH5 will go on forever. We won’t, but the friendships that we have found in the club certainly will.
I wish you all the best in 2013.
