The RUN
The Hare had sub-contracted his run to his team of co-hares. The trail started very well with trail papers properly laid. Me (Hong Kee), being the sweeper for this run went in last. This was gonna be an eventful run. Distance was slightly over 8km but over rough and tough terrain. The co-hares got lost and had problem finding the out-trail. And to add to the drama, AK47 and Chili-padi were lost for more than 6 hours inside the jungle. Eventually, Chili-padi's husband, Bonsai and the rescue team found them at the edge of the lake. We will relate the story as it unfolds.
At 6pm sharp, GM Baby Monkey called for "On-On". I was the last to start. Just before entering the jungle I saw Tambah Nilai, AK47 (Ashok) and Chili-Padi (Karen). Tambah Nilai asked us to go ahead as he was still waiting for his 2 guests.
The 3 of us then tracked for about 15 mins before we met Goldfinger and his 2 guests (Mr & Mrs Phang). AK47 & Chili-padi overtook them while I stayed behind with Goldfinger's group. Before the ascend, Mrs Phang was exhausted and Goldfinger decided to reverse. I continued uphill and at around 6:45pm, caught up with Touch & Gold, EmasTag and their niece. By then, I presumed AK47 & Chili-padi were ahead of us by 20 mins. We had to take short breaks for EmasTag's niece to recover. We subsequently reached the peak (220m) around 7:15pm.
Tambah Nilai then called Touch & Gold saying that they were on their way uphill. I waited for them while Touch & Gold went forward. About 10 mins later Tambah Nilai and group came up and we followed the paper trail which took us downhill, northwards.
At 7:45pm we reached a split path. We reckoned it must be here that both AK47 & Chili-padi took a wrong turn. (refer map marked with green arrow and *). Click map below for a larger view.
The correct trail was to abruptly turn left, heading northwards for a short distance and then eastwards to join the in-trail in order to exit the jungle. Between this point and the housing estate, it was about 2.1km, a long journey considering we had to move around with only torch-lights to lead the way and the terrain being rough and uneven, interrupted by uprooted trees.
I came back at 9:15pm.
At 10:30pm, after circle and while having dinner, Big Mouth Monkey pointed out that 2 car keys were still unclaimed. A BMW key and a Porsche, belonging to Chili-padi and AK47 respectively.
A search team was immediately organised. Ben and Ah Heng went in immediately to search for our 2 hashers. An hour later, they came out without any news of both AK47 & Chili-padi.
Subsequently, Ben saw a flickering light across the lake and could hear faint calls from there. Noting that this must be them, he tried to venture in again but came back without being able to reach them.
By 12midnight, another team comprising, Victor, Bonsai, GM and Crazy Cock went in.
By 1am the 2nd team still could not find a way to the 2 lost hashers. Fortunately, both AK47 and Chili-padi stayed at the edge of the lake. We then suggested to Victor to shout from the edge of the lake. By 1:30am they managed to make contact with AK47 - calling out from across the lake.
By 2am the rescue team reached them. They then bashed their way along the circumference of the lake to reach the housing estate.
It was 3:30am when all arrived back at run site to the relief of everyone.
So much for Crazy Cock's run .... it's crazy isn't it?? On-On!!
