To our foreign readers (1/4 of the readers), E'mas means GOLD in Malay. Hash these days is both local and global. HSBC slogan's states that they are 'the world's local bank'. They have a global reach but yet understand the unique needs of each local arena. HSBC was initially named Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank, but was renamed HSBC to give it a global identity.

Sure there is a place for local Malay hash names, especially if there is an overwhelming reason to do so (i.e. there is no such English word or the best way to express is in Malay). The other hasher in GH5 with a Malay hash name is Tongkat Ali. Tongkat Ali is an aphrodisiac made from roots of a particular tree. Despite decades of effort by the local herbal industry it has not made its impact nor gain acceptance outside of Malaysia.  Years ago Tongkat Ali was a buzz word, but now its appeal is dead even in Malaysia. Another member is named Sepuluh Lima literally meaning half past six in English, which in truth hardly an exhorting or exalting name to the hasher. Sure there is a place for classy Malay names, and again I emphasize "classy", not classic and bordering on mediocre..

The Malay language has yet to develop into an international language in the business, hashing and educational milieus, and it never will. But this cannot be the excuse to belittle the language. It has its primary role in the Malaysian context to unite the people of all ethnic groups. Because of religious sensitivities regarding drinking, there are no Malay hashers, nor a Malay speaking chapter. But nonetheless, hashing has gone international and from here it had been exported across to all corners of the world, not through Malaysians but via the British expatriates who were transferred throughout the Commonwealth.

The Brits just didn't create hashing in Malaysia, but founded some of the best missionary schools (Assunta, La Salle, Methodist Boys School, Victoria Institution, St John's just to name a few) here and gave us an education system that was once amongst the best in the world. The situation is dire today, as those that can afford are shunning the state schools and are sending their kids to private schools (vernacular schools included) and universities abroad. The Brits also gave us a model of government, whereby for checks and balances, power is separated into the legislative, executive and the judiciary. But today...#*+#censored¥.

Teaching and learning of English as a second language in Malaysia has not been effective at all. The most the country could produce today are those who could speak Manglish – an indecipherable mixed language of English words and mother tongue – and could write nothing intelligible in the language after years of so-called education.
Our defacto GH5 language?

International hash chapters and events are basically conducted in English – the international hash language. Our own hash circle is conducted in English. The English language is the primary language for commerce, international communication and in the hashing community in Malaysia. It is also a language widely used for tertiary education throughout the world. Globally 90 percent of academic stuff – from books to e-journals – is written in English.

The Internet is filled with over 90 percent reading corpus in English. Facebook is in English. This blog that I inherited is written in English as it is the lingua franca of GH5.

So much for all that. Friends, "reading makes a man broad, but writing makes him exact (precise) - Francis Bacon, 22 Jan 1561 - 9 April 1626.  The run was a tough but great run. The 4th and last check was a source of contention. The circle was kinda long but mind you it was conducted on home ground so we savoured it as the night allowed. The dinner was at the nearby Kam Kee Restaurant.

Thanks to the hare for the splendid night. You are not just an E'mas TAG. You are not an automatic tollgate collector. You are not your husband's side kick, but the core of his blessings. Your face is full of prosperity   and the reason why your husband will be ever more prosperous. You are his Fort Knox (a name with great blessings!). That is where he gets all his gold from ha!ha!

Fort Knox, where 4587 metric tons of gold bullion is kept

Perhaps Fort Knocks would be also a good name to recognize her good-sized knockers ya!
Name those knockers I will. "Fort KNOCKS"

Hash House Harriers and Harriets, we are a global family with local characteristics. Like HSBC, HHH is both macroscopic and microscopic. Hashing transcends all races, cultures and nations. Race, language and religion do not divide Malaysians, politics does. The true spirit of hash if given a chance, can unite Malaysians. On!On!
